The casualties incurred in this victory were quite serious to Ewell's Division. Col. Seymour, of the 6th Louisiana, commanding Taylor's Brigade, was killed He was born in Georgia and lived in Macon
when I was a kid. He was a veteran of the Seminole and Mexican Wars, and a thorough military man. He moved to New Orleans, and was the editor and proprietor of The Picayune when he received his
appointment of Colonel-General. Taylor said of him, "Brave old Seymour! Georgia has been fertile of worthies, but has produced none more deserving than Col. Seymour. He was sacrificed on the altar
of the bloodiest of all Molochs, Ignorance!"
