Well, you learn something every day. After more digging I found that the Crescent Blues were assigned to the 49th Virginia on July 17, 1861, and served with it during the First Battle of Manassas. So, the story of Rose Rooney being at the battle and tearing down a rail fence is probably true. It was not until October 1861 that the company was transferred to St. Paul's Foot Rifles.
