I have found that it was a 60-day unit but my main question is why was it formed? My guess is that in the summer of 1863 most of the Union defenders of New Orleans were at Port Hudson and there was a fear that the rebels might attack the city. Thus, some short-termed troops were raised until the crisis passed.
