Gen. John W. "Blackjack" Davidson's Raid 1864

Great new book with a 7th Mississippi connection. "The Great Sweet Potato Raid" by Chris Watts and Greg Price. A well written and thoroughly researched record of this little reported raid across South Mississippi and Louisiana. Usually confused with Grierson's raids, but not by those who suffered its sting. Particularly Tangipahoa Parish and Camp Moore and Marion County Mississippi.

Eye witness accounts of U.S. General "Blackjack" Davidson's Cavalry raid across Louisiana and south Mississippi in December of 1864. Few were spared as this army, intent on destroying property and feeding off the land, marched through the yellow pine forests, farms, and swampland with a goal of destroying the Mobile & Ohio Railroad in east Mississippi and then attacking the port of Mobile. Although neither of its ultimate goals were achieved, the disruption and fear generated by the presence of thousands of federal troops wreaked havoc and left the territory and people destitute in that last winter of the Civil War.
