Following the old route does anyone know the distance from where Gen. Cuvier Grover was (4 miles West of Snaggy Piont) to where Col. Kiegwin was @ Wilsons Landing. Col Kiegwin reports skirmishing in the rear, so it is not known exactly how far the line goes to the West, and Robinson claims that 4 miles West of Choctaw Bayou the road, the approaches to Choctaw Bayou, have to be repaired first (finished at 10 a.m. the day after their arrival) before the trains can start to cross upon their arrival at 12 p.m. According to Robinson Captain Chamberlain removed the bridge the following morning at 4 a.m.
I think 16-18 hours would be a fair estimate. The magnitude of the lenght of this retreat is in my opinion, incredible.
Thats not to mention all that was loaded on the transports...animals...equiptment...contrabands...the number of ships etc...one can only imagine the ecological conditions at Alexandria upon the Union's withdrawal...dead poeple...dead animals..human waste...fire...deseased water...destruction everywhere...no food...no foreage...no medicine...Then the following Spring of 1865, Alexandria is under Water !
THIS WAS A TUFF TIME TO BE ALIVE !!! These Louisiana battles did not compare to the war's in the East.
From 4 miles West of Snaggy Point to somewhere West of Wilsons Landing is about how far ?
