If I'm not mistaken I believe when the Choctaw was bieng crossed some of the tail end of the Union forces were at Wilsons Landing, about 8.2 miles to the West. Maj. Gould of one of the Maine Infantries stated that when they camped at the Choctaw, all the trees bore hard evidence of being shelled.
