In the Congressional Series set, p. 55 in a message from General Banks to Admiral Porter 4.13.64, 8:30 p.m. from Osborne Plantation, Banks mentions:
My HDQRTS are at Osborne Plantation for the night (marked Welsh's Plantation upon the map) 8 miles distant from the enemy according to information we received here. I desire to move against him early in the morning and shall rely upon the gunboats being in position to test the strenght of his right which rest upon the river. I hope you will be able to send forward such boats as may be necessary for this purpose.
Gen. Smith has been ordered to join you tomorrow at 3 a.m..The enemy appears to be posted between the river and Bayou Lamourie.This force is estimated at 10-15,000. N.P.Banks
Of course there are mistakes...first off, this probably occurs after May 13.1864...after Banks began the retreat from Alexandria. "Osborne being marked as Welsh's Plantation upon the map" is what I do not understand. Was there a Welsh Plantation used during the retreat (around Ft. Derussy) and, if so, where was it located and why would it be marked as Osborne upon Porters map ? Osborne was the William H., and brother, John Osborne Plantation the Union raided from 5.5-5.13.1864 which I believe was located (not certain) close to Bayou Latanier along the Red River.Not too far from this plantation (I need this exact location also) was Stafford's Plantation.
Another mistake is Gen. Bank's estimation of his opposing forces...had Gen. Taylor had 15,000 soldiers Gen. Banks would have been stopped a lot earlier.(Hind sight is 20/20). Would the 8 miles distance from the enemy place the enemy around Wilsons Ferry ?
