I did not save the messages from Richard S. Taylor but I do remember that he sent 3-4 messages to Lt. Gen. Kirby Smith office @ Shreeveport during the Red River Campaign. I believe the messages were sent in Latin and each party had predetermined understood meaning of certain phrases . I believe it required a cipher disc rotation on a single axle, but, I have yet understood what & # 38 was intended to mean. This particular phrase was used in all the 3-4 messages sent by Richard s. Taylor.
