Slight correction to my reply. While I got my information from Ed Bearss, he got his information from the diary of Felix Pierre Poche, who recorded that "One poor soldier of the Crescent Regiment was killed on the field by the accidental discharge of his gun which blew off half of his head." This is on page 124 of A Louisiana Confederate: Diary of Felix Pierre Poche, edited by Edwin C. Bearss. Unless there was another unfortunate accident that Poche was unaware of, West was the man.
