The Eastport was discovered by archaeologists using a magnetometer on a helicopter back when the J. Bennett Johnston Waterway was about to be constructed. Because the Red River has shifted since the Civil War, the shipwreck now sits beneath a pecan plantation. During the excavation, they discovered a commercial steamboat hit the Eastport wreck shortly after the war ended and sank on top of it. A lot of people might would like to be able to pinpoint the wreck(s) on a map, but if you decide to post the GPS location, I would recommend adding a statement that the wrecks are on private property and that trespass laws apply.
