I've done a bit on this guy too. Everything I have read convinces me he was in Jackson's van when Jackson was wounded at Chancellorsville. Johns was wounded too and captured. A member of Jackson's staff confirmed other people were captured after being wounded. If I recall a horse or two bolted for the wrong lines. Johns not positively identified but circumstantial evidence is heavy. Johns was also at Appomattox and rode with Col. Marshall to find a meeting place for the surrender. After McLean house found, Johns was sent back to inform Lee. It's not known if Johns was in the party that returned for the official surrender. This info re Appomattox is backed up in New York Herald of April 15, 1865. I personally believe the info about being with Jackson as well.
