The subject of the Labadieville Raid is one that has always fascinated and intrigued me. You see, Jean Webre Jr., and Lovincy A. (Lovering in Unon records) Webre were my husbands G-G Uncles. I have never been able to locate evidence of whether the fines were paid or not. However, given the amount of wealth owned by Jean Pierre Webre Sr. I have to believe that our family paid. I can only imagine that the Union would have loved nothing more than seizing the lands and properties of a man who by todays standards would be a millionaire several times over.

A lot has also been written as to the "stealing of horses and food stuffs, etc" by this band of guerillas. While citizens reported the items as "stolen" when questioned, the citizens of Assumption and Lafourche Parishes were actually aiding and abetting these soldiers. There are family stories of the parents, and families of these men being rousted out of bed in the middle of the night and taken outside while the houses were searched. At one point, the men had been at Lovincy's home making plans to escape to another area, when word came that the Union forces were riding to the house because they had been informed that the group had been seen in the area. Lovincy and the men escaped to the woods around the bayou. The children were bedded down and lamps turned out and in the middle of the night the family was wakened by the Union troops. The children were terrified, but at least this time, the soldiers appeared respectful and did not shove anyone around. A Confederate flag of some type, which was left behind in haste, was found and they were questioned heavily, but not harmed. Another time the group attended a family wedding celebration and escaped out the back door of the home as the Union Troops advanced from the front.

Let me say that these men were well thought of and respected in their community. After the war Lovincy was elected Sheriff of Lafourche Parish while Jean Jr. went on to be elected to several different and high ranking parish offices in Assumption. As for Omer Boudeaux, what I do know of him pictures him to have been quite a charmer and talker. He appears to have been a wild card in the bunch and had somewhat of a mean streak, as far as I can tell.
