Thompson Greenfield was the son of William and Ruth Thompson Greenfield, and married Elizabeth Brunson in Stewart County, Tennessee in 1843.

Before the capture of New Orleans in May of 1862, he was a member of a secret local organization known as the Southern Independence Association.

The partners of Fellows & Company were cotton factors and commission merchants.
