The comment was based on the diary of Sergeant John S. Tucker, Company D of the 5th Alabama, who writes: "June 27th, 1863. Had a hard march and reached Carlisle at sundown, all jaded and worn down. Camped in the U.S. Barracks. Went into town with a party. Stores all empty." Could a portion of his brigade have been at the barracks?
