actually O'Neal's Alabamians were camped just outside of Carlisle along the Baltimore Turnpike guarding the eastern and southern approaches to the town. Daniel's, Ramseur's and Daniels Brigades were at the barracks. Doles' Georgians were camped on the west side of town on the campus of Dickinson College. The troops in the town itself also included Carter's artillery Battalion and Rufus Wharton's 1st North Carolina Sharpshooter Battalion, which consisted of two companies assigned directly to Ewell's headquarters as provost guards, and Capt Frank Bond's Company A from the 1st Maryland Cavalry Battalion.
