The main part of Johnson's Division (including Nicholls brigade) and the two battalions from the reserve artillery from the 2nd Corps arrived outside of town along Valley Turnpike on June 27. They trailed behind Rodes' Division which reached the town earlier in day on Walnut Bottom Road. Johnson's troops halted in a large grove about three miles west of Carlisle near Alexander Spring. The exception was Brig. Gen. George H. "Maryland" Steuart's Brigade, which had not yet rejoined the division following a raid over the mountains to McConnellsburg. That brigade finally joined them there on the following day.
