J. Soule, Private, Capt. F. Gomez’s Company , (First), unattached,* enlisted September 10, 1861 at Camp Lewis near
N. Orleans by Lt. Jno. G. Devereau, La. Art., CSA, to serve until 18 June, 1863, although his name is on the muster roll for this date, his presence is not stated, no other records

* This company subsequently became (Old) Company A, 23rd Regiment Louisiana Infantry, and was disbanded on the evacuation of New Orleans.

The regiment was organized as the 23rd Regiment Louisiana Infantry in January, 1862. Companies A, B. C and D having served prior to that date as the Orleans Battalion Louisiana Artillery and the other companies as independent organizations. Upon the evacuation of New Orleans, and the forts adjacent therein, one company was captured and six practically disbanded on account of the men refusing to serve outside the State. Remnants of the other companies reached Vicksburg, Miss., and were temporarily attached to the 1st Regiment Louisiana Heavy Artillery. Subsequently the regiment was partially reorganized with five companies which were lettered A to E. The designation was changed in 1863 to the 22nd Regiment Louisiana Infantry and it was consolidated with the 3rd, 17th,21st, Patton’s, 26th, 27th, 28th (Thomas’) and 31st Regiments Louisiana Infantry January 16, 1864, to form one regiment which was designated the 22nd Regiment (Consolidated) Louisiana Infantry February 3, 1864.
