The Mechanic's Institute was a nation-wide technical school sort of thing. The New Orleans' Mechanic's Institute was located where the Roosevelt Hotel is on Canal Street. It was the scene of the infamous New Orleans Riot of 1866 when the Democratic city police attacked mostly black demonstrators who were calling for black vote rights. I didn't know the building was used as a Civil War hospital.
