“My Civil War ancestor's name was John Higgins. He was born in Ireland c. 1844 and was brought to the U.S. by his mother in 1853. He signed up for active duty in Hudson in 1862 and joined Company A, of the 159th Regiment, NY Volunteer Infantry. He was seriously wounded at the Battle of Irish Bend, Louisiana, on April 15, 1863. It was said that he was in danger of losing his leg. On May 18, 1863, he died in Mechanic's Institute Hospital, New Orleans.”
