communicating in the Lafourche District

Interested to know how would a cavalry company, who for the most part would be in the middle of nowhere, communicate with headquarters miles away ? Did they use the battery wagons perhaps placed on a near by gunboat ? Because for the most part, Lafourche was under water in 1865 and cavalry was using row boats just to get around, or, did they simply wait until they were back in camp at a "land line" station to relay their messages ? I've noticed that many times the reports of skirmishes were sometimes reported a couple of days following the actual date of the incidents when the participating parties returned to camp, while some reports were done in the field almost appearing in real time. I noticed that for the 1865 Operation at Brashear City, Gen. Cameron moves the telegraph station from Tigerville to Brashear City so he can be in better communications with his gunboats. Am I to assume this meant wiring and poles were to follow this move form Tigerville to Brashear City, or was their some other way ?
Explain how these battery wagon operated and if they were used in 1865 Lafourche or anywhere else in Louisiana during the Civil War.
