From Bergeron, LA Confed. Units, 178:
"Prairie Rangers Company Cavalry (St. Landry). Captain Nathaniel Van Woert, resigned January 9, 1862; Captain William Spencer, resigned(?) June 5, 1862; Captain Samuel M. Todd. Organized July 20, 1861, as a militia company. Joined the St. Landry Militia Cavalry Regiment on April 5, 1862. Transferred to Confederate service on August 20, 1862. Performed scout and courier duty and became headquarters guard for General Richard Taylor. Collected conscripts for the army and operated against Jayhawkers and deserters in southwestern Louisiana. Became Company K, 3rd Louisiana (Harrison's) Cavalry Regiment in the fall of 1863."

Capt. Todd’s Independent Company Cavalry (Prairie Rangers) La. Vols. Company Muster Roll for the period August 20 to December 31, 1862 shows station of company at Alexandria, La., no record of events, no other muster rolls in the records of Company K, 3rd Cavalry
Enlisted August 20, 1862 for the war, served as a Company in La. Militia
