George, thanks, but I'm not sure that is my man.

I again pulled what notes I could find from the family and previous searches, and this is what I have found:

McCoy,William Capell “Bill” (1835-1880) married, Irene Chapman Hill (1847-1938) widow of Samuel W. Hill. Bill served in the 3rd La Cav. (Wingfield’s), 9th Battn. La. Cav. (Combined 3rd and 9th Battn.); see also Stewart’s Legion (2 Inf. Cos. and one Cav. company) (AKA 17th LA. Battn.) March 1862 at Camp Moore, LA. Unit eventually was part of Wirt Adams, Greg’s and Maxey’s Cav. See also 25th LA. See also 9th La. Infantry ANV. Joined in 1861 and went to VA in 1861 (dates do not match letter indicating Bill left in spring or early summer 1862). Family records indicate that he was 26 years old and married in 1861.

Note: William C. McCoy, Company C 23rd Miss. Inf. Previously identified as William Capell is not the same man. (This man was William Carroll McCoy). Error was based on cursory search since the man was from Mississippi. No one had previously checked LA units.
