Re: Louisiana skull auction - burial site

I checked with a friend at Gettysburg NMP about the status of the relics, including the skull. He was able to answer a few questions. First, he said that the auctioneer indicated that the relics were found on the Josiah Benner farm but I'm not sure why. The provenance appears to be very sketchy. The card with the display does not indicate, from what I saw. Second, there is some concern that there are no accounts in local newspapers in 1949 about human remains being found and said that this was a very common practice in the 30's, 40's and 50's to document finds. There is a scabbard tip with a bit of leather still attached and he said this is very unusual considering the acidic soil at both farms. There is also some question as to the authenticity of the Louisiana box sling plate. Lastly, they are going to have the skull examined by specialists from the Smithsonian later this year to verify its age. So there is a cloud of doubt on this whole deal, and probably well should be with the proliferation of fake relics on the market today. Anyone else with information, please keep us in the loop.
