Mail Delivery

Thought I'd share this from the Opelousas Courier. Regular mail service between Louisiana and Virginia ended with the loss of Vicksburg and Port Hudson, so any mail delivered to soldiers in the east had to be hand carried. Lt. Cooke was sent to Louisiana to recruit for the 8th La. and apparently was heading back to Virginia soon.

"Those who have letters to send to Virginia may leave them (until the 1st December) with Mr. Posey, in Opelousas, or Mr. Millspaugh in Washington. Lt. Thomas D. Cooke, 8th Louisiana Infantry, will forward to their destination." Opelousas Courier, November 26, 1864.
