I had the opportunity to visit the remains of the school in Pineville Louisiana, and have posted pictures with narratives at www.CivilWaralbum.com. Union general William T Sherman worked at the school before the war, and it is believed that he gave express orders for the school not to be destroyed. The Union Army under the direction of Sherman's acquaintance AJ Smith burned Alexandria to the ground with the exception of the school, a Catholic Church, and the Kent house-home of Sherman's former boss. Today the site is a park, so you can see the ruins. In Gary D Joiner"s book, Little to Eat and Thin Mud to Drink, there are transcribed letters written to the wife of Jeff Morgan. Jeff Morgan who served in Company "E" Likens' 35th Texas Cavalry Regiment, and was confined to the hospital located on the site until his unfortunate death in 1864 after the Red River Campaign. His remains along with those of many other Confederates lie in nameless graves somewhere in the area. I've had the opportunity to see the personal effects of Jeff Morgan which were sent home to Midlothian Texas rather than buried with him. Please do not start digging and disturbing the graves of these soldiers, you will find nothing because all of their personal effects were either sent home or used by their comrades.
