USCT Ancestor

I'm trying to determine if one of my ancestors, Charles Chauncey Cone (dob Mar. 30, 1843) , had any prior service in the union army before being appointed (Nov, 1863) lieut. in Co I, 8th USCT. He was severely wounded at Chaffins Farm before Petersburg, Sept 29, 1864 and dow Ft. Monroe Oct 23, 1864. Currently I'm doing research on his and other USCT regiments (2nd, 7th, 10th). I currently live near Unionville, MD which is a community which was founded by USCT (2, 7, 10) veterans after their return from the war. Many were slaves given up to the army in return for $300 to their owners. The 7th was in the same brigade as the 8th. I have a great deal of information regarding my ancestors service in the 8th but was curious as to did he have any service in another regiment prior to this. Thanks for any help you can provide.
