Again, thank you. I have full access to Ancestry.com, so I will dig some more in to census records. So John Conrad Kuntz clearly wasn't my guy, but the first one could still be. You said it shows he was wounded in the back, would have been at the first battle of Manassas: that would have taken him out of the war, yes?

Took a break from writing to search the census. There was one Johnny Kuntz in the 1860 census for New Orleans, 18 years of age at that point, German born, worked as a Drayman. Couldn't find anything for a Conrad Kountz. Johnny could be John Conrad Kuntz, but that's just conjecture...and the absence of a second John Kuntz from the census doesn't mean much either, as another one could have been present, but his name could have been mis-transcribed. There's still a chance, though, that the first John Kuntz was my ancestor. I just wish I had more to go on. Thank you for your help, it is very appreciated.
