hangings at abshire cemetery 4.30.63
In Response To: Re: General j.j. alfred mouton ()

11 men were hanged at said cemetery on said date.on 4.17. 63. Gen. Taylor, following the battle of Vermilion Bayou, divided his forces (all mounted) into 3 sections. Thomas green withdrew Northwards with Gen .. Taylor, Gen. Mouton headed in the direction of Niblette Bluff, Col. Major headed towards the Mermentau River. The Westward forces were searching for deserters of Gen. Sibleys forces (and others) who deserted form the battle at Bisland / Irish bend. The hangings occured near Cossinade, La. at the Stelly residence. Does any one know what officer / regiment responsible for the hangings, and the exact location of the Stelly residence ? It was reported as being conducted by orders of Gen. Mouton, but, both forces sent Westward were under the command of Gen. Mouton.
