He died of wounds on 7/9/1863
He was listed as:

[Paul] Semmes was born at Montford's Plantation in Wilkes County, Georgia.[1] He was a cousin of future Confederate naval hero, CSS Alabama Captain Raphael Semmes. His half-brother, Albert Gallatin Semmes, later became an Associate Justice of the Florida Supreme Court.

Oliver John Semmes was born at Norfolk, VA, August 29, 1839, son of Raphael Semmes and Anne E. Spencer. Raphael Semmess was an admiral of the Confederate States Navy, commander of the Sumter and the Alabama. Judge Semmes himself, also served throughout the civil war.*
