There were four company grade officer positions with command authority. The "pecking order" for the purpose of chain of command in the heat of battle was: Captain, 1st Lieutenant, 2nd Lieutenant (aka Sr. 2nd Lieutenant) and 3rd Lieutenant (aka Jr. 2nd Lieutenant).
I believe that Heavy Artillery regiments were authorized two 1st Lieutenants with one being senior and one being junior.
