J. E. Hewitt attributes the death of Mouton to the 130th Illinois. Although Hewitt doesn't mention it, the story usually given says that a small number of surrendering Union soldiers picked up their guns again when they saw Mouton and shot him from his horse. Advancing confederates then retaliated by opening fire on all surrendering Union forces in the vicinity.
