The Plains Store Rangers

“For almost 150 years a Plains Store stood at the historic Louisiana crossroads community of The Plains in northern East Baton Rouge Parish. In the spring of 1862, a cavalry company known as the Plains Store Rangers proudly rode out of The Plains and courageously carried the name of this iconic landmark as they journeyed through the chaotic and uncertain landscape of the American Civil War.” These are words from my recently published book, The Plains Store Rangers: Riding in a Company of Brothers, which is a follow-up to my previous publication, Crossroads of Memories: Growing up in The Plains. Although I now live in South Carolina, I spend my childhood in The Plains and my parents actually operated the Plains Store at The Plains crossroads. In my most recent book, I chronicled the exploits of the cavalry company from their initial formation in 1862 to the end of the war. A post-war years epilogue also includes what happened to the most notable characters in the story and I even have a complete listing of all the men who served in the company.
