Perhaps 5,000 slaves accompanied the Army of Northern Virginia in the summer of 1863, many of whom performed vital support and logistics tasks such as cooking, tending to horses, nursing the wounded, driving wagons, carrying mail, foraging for subsistence, and so on. They are never included in the strength of the army, but I don't know why not, since without them those same duties would have engaged soldiers detailed from the ranks.
