Lieutenant H. A. Battles of Washington Artillery

A biographical profile on "Heman" (Herman) Asbury Battles appears in the Supplement to the Obituary Record of Graduates of Yale University 1880-1890 (online). It states that he was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on 22 October 1828. After graduating from Yale in 1851, he taught at an Academy in Providence, Mississippi, then was a tutor in Point Coupee, Louisiana. He moved to New Orleans in 1853 and joined the firm of Wright, Allen and Co. He served in the Washington Artillery during the war and was severely wounded at Fredericksburg in December 1862. He recovered and rejoined his unit, surrendering at Appomattox. After the war he established the firm of Battles, Thorn and Co. By 1879 he was in Silver Cliff, Colorado, and he died in Colorado Springs on 2 May 1881. The Official Records indicate he played a prominent role at Gettysburg, as a First Lieutenant in Norcom's Battery, Washington Artillery, where he commanded a section of guns in the grand cannonade preceding Pickett's charge. Also, Booth's Records render his first name as Henry, not Herman.
