Re: J. Duncan Stuart - Miles Legion

Thanks Dr. Jones. Yes, I should have mentioned that I did check Bergeron's and Hewitt's book on Miles Legion. They only state that since the 3 cavalry companies were not officially part of the Legion that they do not cover them in the book. Actually, listed in the CSMR's as part of Miles Legion, those 3 cavalry companies acted independently and were loosely what is also described as Cage's Battalion. Stuart commanded the 2nd Company and was succeeded by B. F. Bryan after his death. Evidently these companies were not even organized until Dec. 1862 (according to Art's book) so Stuart would have less than a month to live with them. He had originally enlisted in Co. B of the 7th La. (Baton Rouge Fencibles) and was commissioned as a Lieutenant but for whatever reason, resigned in Sept. 1861. Then he appears to have organized this independent Cavalry company which was reported by the Adj. Gen to have had a total enrollment of 147 men. Thanks,
Wayne
