Louisiana Women Soldiers and 16th La.

The following is an extract from the Regimental history of the 7th Mississippi:

"Louisiana Regt. with Women Soldiers—One a Lieutenant, Sword and All

Here Jobe Foxworth (Company D "Jeff Davis Sharpshooters" 7th Mississippi; who along with many others attended Centenary College)
relates an interesting story that occurred the night before the regiment moved from Henderson, Tennessee on March 17th. “The night before we left Henderson a La. and an Arkansas regiment landed there. In the La. Regiment there were several women, which circumstance attracted great notice with us, who have never see a wo—man living a soldier’s life. Some of them were dressed in men’s clothes, uniformed. I have heard from John M. Sims that there was one a lieutenant in a company, that he saw her with a sword on and the dress of such a rank. He did not know any thing more about it.”

Does anyone know of any research that might shed light onto the identity of yjis woman officer?

Another excerpt:

16th Louisiana Camp, Corinth, Mississippi

“Yesterday evening [Mar. 18th] after we had fixed our tents I walked about half a mile to the camp of the sixteenth La. Regiment, Col. P. Pond, with James and Daniel Warren, to see an acquaintance and favorite schoolmate by the name of Cockerham, a lieutenant in a company from Bienville parish..."

Would like to know more about these men as well.

From my index notes:

Some of them were dressed in men’s clothes, uniformed. I have heard from John M. Sims that there was one a lieutenant in a company, that he saw her with a sword on and the dress of such a rank. He did not know any thing more about it.”
