There was a stagecoach road from Cheneyville to Opelousas and IIRC Vermillionville (Lafayette). I assume a stage also ran from Alexandria to Cheneyville. That may be the route he took. Had he gone towards Marksville I assume he would have likely gone down the Red River.

If he did take that route he would have gone from Cheneyville south through Bayou Chicot, Ville Platte (Flat Town), Washington and then to Opelousas and perhaps Lafayette. It would be a short trip from Lafayette to Henderson.

This is complete speculation on my part so don't take this as anything more. If he did take that route he passed very near my house. Just today my brother-in-law and I were trying to remember the name of the ferry over Cocodrie Bayou just south of Lloyd's Hall Plantation. Thinking about the stageline has jarred my memory... the name was "Wade's Ferry". Thanks for unclogging my forgetter pipe!
