Prior to Milliken's Bend, the Federals utilized gunboat support on their advance to Irish Bend. The Confederates also used the captured gunboat "Diana" to support their Infantry at Irish Bend (April 14, 1863).

Of course, Federals used extensive gunboat support during the Battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia, on July 1, 1862.
