Jordan Carroll Harris, of the 81st Illinois, was involved in the capture of Fort DeRussy on March 14, 1864, and wrote in a letter home that the capture involved "between 250 & 300 men among whom I found some of my cousins. One was George Gilliam, Mynyard Gilliam's son of the 14th Tex. I liked his appearance very well. One or two others claimed kin with me... " But Harris left the next day. Coincidentally, he later was a prisoner at Andersonville.
