CPT was killed in the Battle of Cedar Creek VA, Oct 19, 1864. In the records his company captain describes him as an excellent soldier. Cedar Creek was the last of several major battles in which the Confederates were on the verge of a major victory which for one reason or another became a major defeat.

To return to your question, this is one of those unusual cases in which records of two or more soldiers are included in one file. I find no record of discharge for the first soldier you mentioned who survived the war. It would be easy for a War Department clerk to become confused and place records for both men with the same last name in the same service file.
