I have only limited access to Ancestry.com, but I was able to come up with this little information. Could not locate Thomas P. in any later census.

Phifer for the duration of the war, recorded on the Jul & Aug, 1862 muster roll as absent, on furlough, wounded slightly, at Fort Republic, Virginia, June 9, 1862, died of gunshot wound received at Port Republic, December 3,1862, born in Louisiana, resident of St. Joseph, La., participated also in the battles of Winchester, May 25, 1862 and Cross Key's June 8,1862
