2nd LA Cavalry

Ms. Allen

I would like to add a little information to that provided so well by George Martin, specifically relating to the information on the 2nd Louisiana Cavalry, which had a key roll in the fight at Irish Bend.

The information on the 2nd LC is obtained from Crute, Joseph H., Jr. Units of the Confederate States Army. Gaithersburg: Old soldier Books, Inc., 1987, p. 140. There are several serious errors in the Crute information, which will be confirmed by use of the NPS-CWSS site cited by George, and by referring to Booth, Andrew B. Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers and Louisiana Confederate Commands. New Orleans, LA, Vol. I-III, 1920.

1. The only Colonel the 2nd had during the war was Col. William Germain Vincent. Blair was never Col. of the 2nd.

2. There were four Lt. Colonels during the war, in order: James A McWaters, Winter W Breazeale, James D. Blair and Walter O Breazeale.

3. There were four Majors during the war, in order: Winter W Breazeale, James D. Blair, Walter O Breazeale, and Scrimzeour C Furman.

4. Although many of the men were from south LA, at least half of the men were from central, central-western and northwestern LA. Five of the companies came from NW LA, one from central LA, and four from south LA.

Co. A - St. Landry Parish (South LA)
Co. B - Natchitoches Parish (NW LA)
Co. C - Natchitoches Parish (NW LA)
Co. D - Natchitoches Parish (NW LA)
Co. E - Sabine, De Soto and Natchitoches Parishes (Cen W to NW LA)
Co. F - Bienville Parish (NW LA)
Co. G - Rapides Parish (Central LA)
Co. H - Assumption Parish (South LA)
Co. I - Iberville Parish (South LA)
Co. K - Pointe Coupee Parish (South LA)

Although the regiment operated mainly in south LA early in the war and in central LA later in the war, all of the companies gained additional recruits from the area they were operating in, whether south, central or NW LA. The important point is that the 2nd LA Cavalry was composed of men from NW LA, South LA and central LA. In any case, they all served LA and the Confederacy to the best of their abilities.

Hope this helps

Don Parker
