Dana, it is very possible that your GGrandfather was mobilized at Fort Humbug during World War II. The history of Fort Humbug goes all the way back to the Civil War.
However, I took a look on Ancestry.com and did locate your GGrandfather and some military information regarding him. He is listed under "Military" and is listed as Calvin Lee Dailey. The dates of birth and death correspond to what you wrote in your posting. The dates of his military service were listed on Ancestry.com as well. They are listed as 15 Mar 1944 to 02 Nov 1945. He is buried at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetey in Elwood, Illinois, Section 10, Site 248. I called the cemetery and asked Tasha, the Secretary at the office, if there was any information other than birth and death. She indicated a "Purple Heart" symbol is engraved on the tombstone, indicating he was wounded while in combat.

Additionally, I went to aad.archvices.gov on the web to look for additional information. There I found you GGrandfather listed as a German Prisoner of War, but no dates were given. However he is listed as Dailey, Calvin Lee, Serial Number 38652183, who following capture by the Germans, served at Stalag 7A, in Moosburg, Bavaria (Zone: 48-12). He is listed as being in Work Camps 3324-46 in Krumbachstrasee 48011, and Work Camp 3368, Munich 48-11. His service was listed in the Army, the European Theatre, in Germany, and that at some point prior to WWII end, was "Returned to Military Control, Liberated or Repatriated/German".

Hopefully, with this information, you can pursue other resources such as the Order of the Purple Heart in your hometown, or go to the National Archives and put in a request for his records since you are next of kin. The resource there is called "vetrecs".
