Young-Sanders Center

Aliene S. Shields of Columbia, South Carolina will be the guest speaker for the Young-Sanders Center Saturday January 15, 2011 at 1:30 in Franklin, Louisiana. Aliene is making the long journey from Columbia South Carolina to Louisiana to talk about her great, grandparents Thomas Marion and Amanda Jane Steadman Shields. Thomas Marion Shields was a Confederate soldier in the 3rd South Carolina Infantry, Company D. She is determined to keep the memory alive of her ancestors and in doing so she has co authored a book with Mac Wyckoff entitled “The Legacy of a Common Civil War Soldier-Private Thomas Marion Shields.”

She inherited 34 letters written by her ancestors during the war. Aliene transcribed these letters and worked around the letters to write what life was like for the family of Thomas Marion Shields while he was away with the Confederate Army. She tells with admiration of the devotion and courage of a Confederate soldier and his wife during this unique period of Southern history. Her book will be available for purchase at the lecture.

Ms. Shields is a retired Special Education teacher with degrees in Special Education, Public Speaking, and Drama from Columbia College, in Columbia South Carolina. She is a member of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
