The final collapse of resistance at Vicksburg was almost, but not quite, the last act involved in splitting the Confederacy into two halves and opening the Mississippi River to northern commerce. DOWNSTREAM 240 RIVER MILES, MG Frank Gardner and some 7,300 COnfederates held out in there fortifications at Port Hudson.
