Re: 3rd Co. WashingtonBattalionVol Artillery

At Gettysburg, the 3rd Company was commanded by Captain Merritt B. Miller and was reported to have had 3 officers and 89 enlisted men present for duty, with a total of 5 being killed, 2 wounded, and 3 others captured/missing. A few native Irishmen and Englishmen served in the unit. The battery was only engaged on the third day (3 July) of the Gettysburg battle, but also on 6 July at Williamsport during the retreat. There is some discrepancy over the type of cannon carried by the battery in that battle - either 2 Napoleons and 1 12-pounder howitzer, or else 3 Napoleons. The other two officers at Gettysburg were 1st Lieutenant Andrew Hero, and 2nd Lieutenant Charles H. Stocker, who was captured at Greencastle, PA on 6 July [probably wounded]. From various sources I can confirm the identities of 25 of the enlisted men who were in the battle. The only firsthand account of the campaign that I could find was a brief diary entry in the John Richardson Porter Papers held by the Special Collections of the Duke University Libraries in Durham, NC, as follows:
"Thurs 2 [July 1863] Reveille at 12 1/2, boots and saddles at [not indicated], road still full of wagons, beautiful road, fine morning for marching ... passed [Steven's ironworks], passed through Cashtown at daylight, at 5 reached New Salem and halted" ... S_W Scotts 'Surgeon's Daughter' [a book]
