Don,

Perhaps you can answer some questions. The following info is fromRecords of Louisiana Confederate Soldier by Andrew B. Booth Vol. 1

Campbell, M. (also Campbell, Marsdell; Campbell, N.), 1st Sergt. Pvt. Co. A. 2nd La. Cav. En.
Aug. 18th, 1862, Opelousas. Roll to Feb. 28th, 1863, Absent. Detailed as Signal. On Register of
Prisoners of War,
Page 236
dated April 25th, 1863, Captured at Franklin, La., April 14th, 1863. Remarks: In Hospl. Boat.
Paroled below Port Hudson, at Prophet's Island, May 5th, 1863. Sent to New Orleans, La., to be
exchanged. Roll for July and Aug., 1863, Absent. Paroled Prisoner April 17th, 1863. Paroled at
Washington, La., June 16th, 1865, Res. New Orleans, La.

What is meant by "absent" and why references to multiple "paroles?" Does it mean he was captured more than once?

One last question, I have a photocopy from the manuscripts department of Tulane University that shows the following:

Special Order#80

Headquarters Brent's Calv. Brigade
***di Plu. Apriol 3rd 1865

I, Col. W. Vincent, Comm of 2nd Regiment of will upon receiving Private Marsden Campbell Co. A 2nd LA Cavly at the hands of Lt. Boatwright Co. F 2nd LA Cavly place him in strict and close confinement *** retain him until further orders from this HQrs

It suggests to me that Marsden had been demoted at some time and must have violated an order or done something wrong that required that he be held in "secure and close confinement" ?

Family history suggests his service was honorable but this special order confuses me.

David
