I found the letter. It is dated May 19, 1862, addressed to His Excellency Jefferson Davis, Pres. Conf. States. The copy is really poor.

Sir,
With pleasure we respecfully recommend to your consideration Marsden Campbell, a native of this state, for a commission as Second Lieutenant in the Confederate Army **** there is a vacancy in the *** Regiment of Light Infantry *** would much prefer an appointment there.
The young gentleman is an intelligent and of highly respectable family. He has served in the Battalion known as D***'s Batallion at Pensacola and also in the Peninsula. His conduct is such as to merit consideration and we trust that he will meet with favor at your hand.
