Re: 2nd Louisiana Cav - Axley Family

Michael

In checking a couple of other places, I did find some limited information on www.ancestry.com

1) John Ackley - Union - LA - Enlisted Co G, 2nd LA Cav-US - Transferred to Co G, 1st LA CAV-US
2) John Axley - Union - LA - Enlisted Co B, 1st LA Cav-US
3) Jehu Axley - Union - LA - Enlisted Co G, 2nd LA Cav-US
4) Jehu S. Axley - Union - LA - Enlisted Co G, 2nd LA Cav-US

I also found 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 US Census documents for John Axley in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. There may be 2 John Axleys in Natchitoches as three documents indicate birth in Missouri and the fourth in TN. The ages were 31 in 1850, 40 in 1860, 52 in 1870, and 60 in 1880 - suggesting that this might be one person. There is some question, but entry errors in these census documents are common.

The www.ancestry.com data provides access to rosters for both the 1st LA (US) and 2nd LA (US) Cavalry units. Also, If I remember correctly, there was a history graduate student at LSU a couple of years ago - Christopher Rein - who was researching the 2nd LA Cavalry-US. I think he graduated and is now working on a PhD elsewhere (Un. Cincinnati ??). If you can find him, he may be able to provide some information.

Hope this helps
