Re: 17th Louisiana Infantry
In Response To: 17th Louisiana Infantry ()

I am looking for information on John Milton Short:

Short, John M.,Pvt. Co. D, 28th (Gray's) La. Inf. En. Monroe, La., May 4, 1862. Roll July and Aug., 1863, Died July 10, 1863, at home, Claiborne Par.

Family stories say he was lost behind Union lines, became ill from exposure, was captured and later died. Records seem to show he was imprisoned at New Orleans but somehow ended up dying at home in Claiborne Parish.

His brothers Young Short and George Washington Short were in the 17th LA Inf, Co H, and were captured at Vicksburg 4 July 1863.

Is there any info in the diaries or records you have?
